Project Summary
The Washington Street Improvement project through downtown Peoria and Peoria's Warehouse District is currently underway. The project aims to transform Washington Street into a safer, more attractive facility for motorists and pedestrians alike.
The boundaries of this project are MacArthur Highway/Cedar Street Bridge on the south and Hamilton Boulevard on the north.

Bounded by Hamilton Boulevard on the north and the MacArthur Highway on the south, the Washington Street Improvements will include wider sidewalks, on-street parking, and other street amenities to better link downtown with Peoria's riverfront as well as to stimulate development in the Warehouse District.

North of Harrison Street in the Business District, the Washington Street improvements will include a planted median, wider sidewalks, on-street parking on the east side of the street, and improved pedestrian amenities. The intersection with Fulton Street will be redesigned to improve pedestrian safety and aesthetics. At Harrison Street, the current traffic signal will be removed and replaced with a modern roundabout, which will also serve as the transition between the Business and Warehouse Districts.

South of the new Washington/Harrison roundabout and through the Warehouse District*, improvements will include a bidirectional center turn lane, wider sidewalks, on-street parking on the both sides of the street, and improved pedestrian amenities to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility while minimizing impacts to car and truck traffic serving current businesses and industries in the area.
* Note: This Washington Street project is closely related to, but separate from, the Warehouse District TIGER II project. The TIGER II project will improve local side streets throughout the Warehouse District in a manner similar to the proposed Washington Street improvements.
